What are Dubai tennis championships?

The Dubai tournament (United Arab Emirates) is a men’s (ATP World Tour) and women’s (WTA Tour) professional sports competition.

In the female category, it is called the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and as of 2015, the tournament alternates each category year with the Qatar Tournament, with the odd years being the WTA 1000 and the even years being the WTA 500.

The players who have won it the most times are, in men, Roger Federer with eight titles and, in women, Justine Henin with four titles. Outside of the Grand Slam and Masters Series, it is the competition that distributes the most money with more than US$ 1,400,000 in prizes.

Tournament history

The Dubai competition is organized as a men’s competition on the eve of the 1993 season, when local organizers bought the ATP main tour base category championship license from the prize in Maceio, Brazil.

The new prize is part of a near-European hard series, located between the Australian Open and the major championship in Indian Wells. In 2001, the organizers managed to raise the status of their prize by one gradation level, when the organizers of the tournament in London, having problems finding a new title sponsor, were forced to first voluntarily lower the status of their championship, and later transfer it to Milan.

In the same year, the Dubai Prize expanded its competition by organizing a women’s prize inside itself: local organizers took advantage of the financial problems of another European prize – in Hannover, Germany – by buying out its license for a WTA second category competition.

A few years later, Dubai, along with their neighbors from Qatar, was able to buy from the association a more status category – WTA Premier 5, agreeing on the mutual rotation of this status between their tournaments with a three-year cycle: the turn of the tournament in the UAE first came in 2009-11.

One of the leaders of the competition is the Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.

Winners and Finalists

Who has claimed the 100th ATP title of his career in the Dubai tennis championships? Roger Federer of Switzerland won the local title eight times between 2003 and 2019 and holds the record for the most wins in the men’s singles tournament.

Serb Novak Djokovic has four titles. A similar prize for women is more diverse in terms of the number of winners, but there are also multiple champions here: Justine Henin has four victories and Venus Williams has three.

In the men’s doubles competition, Indian Mahesh Bhupathi won five victories, and his compatriot Rohan Bopanna became the strongest local court three more times (in 2012, the Indians won the local tournament as part of one team).

In women, the sole record holder of the competition in terms of the number of victories is the South African Liesel Huber, who won the title five times on local courts, including three times together with the Zimbabwean Kara Black.

During the entire existence of the tournament, his title match only once – in the men’s singles competition in 2001 – ended with an early victory for one of the opponents: then Marat Safin could not finish the game against Juan Carlos Ferrero.

What is interesting about the event?

Scandal-2009 was an extremely discussed topic. Not the most friendly relations between the Arab world and Israel were also reflected in the functioning of the Dubai championship: on the eve of the 2009 tournament, local authorities refused an entry visa to the UAE for the Israeli player Shahar Peer, who qualified for the main draw of their single championship due to her sports performance.

This event caused great criticism and dissatisfaction on the part of players, heads of pro tours, and television companies. As a result, several athletes refused to participate in the competition at the last moment, and the WTA fined the organizers $300,000, obliging them to give Shahar the opportunity to play their competition in a year, and if she fails to qualify for the basis of their single competition in terms of sports performance, give her special invitation to the event.

The ranking points that Peer was supposed to defend that week were saved in her points balance for another year.

The Israeli and her doubles partner Anna-Lena Groenefeld also received financial compensation by reason of missing that event (the amount was calculated based on their average earnings in the 2008 season and adjusted for the increase in prize money in 2009.

In 2010, Dubai organizers complied with all the requirements of the pro tours, however, in terms of security, they never allowed Shahar to play on the center court, despite the fact that she reached the semi-final stage that season. This story is good proof that sometimes even odd leaders may leave bettors without their win.

Top players in the season

The popularity of predictions among bettors is also explained by the fact that sensational results are not uncommon here. The industry representatives constantly discuss the incredible losses of the leaders or the victories of dark horses, and sensations are an opportunity to earn large sums.

The audience and gambling market actors mention such players as the most promising in the 2023 season:

  1. Iga Swiatek;
  2. Daria Kasatkina;
  3. Novak Djokovic!

Pass bets are popular for big tournaments. Bookmakers accept bets on which player will advance to the next round of the competition. So we recommend paying attention to these athletes.

Why betting on the Dubai championship is profitable?

It is the second most popular sport in bookmakers after football. Live betting on this discipline is very popular, as its matches is much more dynamic than football, and the change of events here happens much more often.

Players who do not want to wait for a goal to be scored in football prefer to bet on the winners of games and sets right during the match. That is why the volume of bets on tennis on some days outweighs the volume of bets on football.

Benefits of betting on tennis

The ability to track the form of players. If in the case of the same football it is extremely difficult to track the physical and psychological shape of the 11 main players of each team, then here the issue is much easier to solve – just watch a couple of matches of a certain player, and you can already draw far-reaching conclusions about his current form.

A large number of comebacks during the match. Some of you, of course, will attribute this fact to the disadvantages, but people who are really good at betting will undoubtedly confirm that it is a very good feature in terms of betting. The greatest number of phenomenal comebacks can be observed in the women’s branch. However, there are also enough miracles in men’s clay tournaments.

Competition frequency. You can always bet on the discipline: at any time, on any day of the week. Unlike football, where each championship has a couple of significant breaks of two or three weeks, the season has only one break at the very end of the calendar year, and even then 3-4 middle-level tournaments fit in these 14 days, so its fans will never be bored.

Tips for tennis betting

We would like to warn you against betting on a player who is higher in the ranking, but who is in dubious shape. As practice shows, such bets rarely turn out to be profitable and are certainly unprofitable in the long run. In this regard, it is much more profitable to play in reverse tactics, that is, to bet against favorites who are out of shape.

A successful bettor should be not only a practicing expert in probability theory and a sports analyst but also a subtle psychologist. Then they will always be able to answer, first of all to themselves, the question of how to place reasonable bets on tennis.

Is it a good idea to bet on tennis?

Sports betting is one of the most common gambling entertainments in the world, but some manage to make it a source of permanent income as well. Such betting is especially popular. And this is not strange, because this sport has many fans around the world.

To make winning bets on such a famous discipline, you need not only theory and “feel”, but also an in-depth analysis of matches, knowledge of basic betting systems, and bankroll management strategies.

Choose a tennis bookmaker

The specificity of the discipline makes players think about finding the best bookmaker for this sport. The requirements of each bettor are individual, depending on his financial capabilities, the chosen strategy, and preferences in events and types of bets.

However, the general list of criteria when choosing an office is obvious: a large number of matches in a line, a detailed list in pre-match and live, low margin, and, accordingly, high odds, as well as financial guarantees and a quick withdrawal of funds.

Register and create a game account

Registration on the site of the selected bookmaker is the first step that a bettor who wants to bet on this sport needs to take. When registering, you will be asked to provide standard registration data, as on millions of other sites: full name, residential address, and email, you also need to select the account currency and password.

In addition to registration, bookmakers require their customers to be identified. In many bookmakers, the procedure will be required only at the first withdrawal of funds, but in some places, it may be requested at the time of registration.

Take advantage of matched and arbitrage rates

Negotiated and arbitrage rates, by and large, do not differ much from each other. Their essence is that you need to bet on sports in different bookmakers on opposite outcomes of one match. In this discipline, it is especially convenient to do this, because there are no draw outcomes here.

Therefore, you need to find the maximum odds for one player, and then look for quotes from 2.0 and higher on his opponent.

Arbitrage is the most reliable betting strategy in which the bettor will never lose. But the administrations of betting companies do not like such players and your account may be blocked.

Follow the predictions of tennis experts

Betting beginners must always keep in mind expert opinion. But free predictions of experts should be treated with caution.

First, even the most seasoned experts can make mistakes. You can rely on their opinion, but you should not abandon your own analysis of the match. By putting all the data together, the chances of making a successful bet will increase. Secondly, not all “experts” really understand this sports.
