In pre-pandemic times, the French Alps were considered one of the most popular ski destinations among outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. It is not surprising, because they are considered the largest area in the world, with more than 4,000 ski slopes for both beginners and professionals. Especially since the French have managed to skillfully use what nature has given, equipping it with state-of-the-art infrastructure, as well as offering a variety of leisure activities.
Le Menuire: the friendliest French ski resort
We started our vacation at the ski resort Les Menuires, which is considered to be the most democratic and friendly resort of the legendary Three Valleys in the French Alps. Yes, there is a little less luxury and pathos, but the infrastructure and atmosphere are fine. Not surprisingly, he is loved by fans of active recreation, who are looking for first-class French trails, and families with children, aimed at peace and security.
Le Menuire is located at an altitude of 1850 meters
Which makes it one of the highest resorts in the French Alps and guarantees it a stable snow cover. Therefore, it is developing primarily as a modern sports resort, and many hotels here have access to the track.
Only its own trails around Le Menuire – 160 km. And given that it is still connected by a network of lifts with other resorts of the Three Valleys – Val Thorens, Meribel, La Tanya and Courchevel, you will have access to all 600 km of trails in the region. These trails are the most diverse, for any level of skiing.
However, as a democratic resort, Le Menuire, although it does not have a large number of luxury hotels.
But there are many more affordable options – from hostels and hotels to chalets and apartments. For example, at the beginning of February you can rent a double room in a hotel for 150 euros per night or find an apartment for two or three nights for 225 euros. It is absolutely not profitable to book accommodation for one person or for one night. The best option is six nights with arrival on Saturday in the company of 4 people.
We were kindly accepted by the 4-star aparthotel Le Chalet Du Mont Vallon Spa Resort, which currently costs from 1152 euros for four nights in a double room. By March, prices are falling – five nights will cost 895 euros. The advantages of the hotel – close access to the lift / slope and the availability of storage space for equipment. There is also a spa with a pool where you can relax after skiing.
Tignes: ski season almost all year round
Another very affordable option for skiing in the French Alps – the resort of Tignes at an altitude of 2100 meters. Located on one of the largest snowy expenses in Europe, “Killy”, named after the legendary French skier Jean-Claude Killy, consists of three stations: Tignes-Le-Lac, Tigne-Lavashi and Tin-Val-Clary.
In general, the area Tien – Val d’Isere, located at an altitude of 1,550 to 3,450 m, offers lovers of active recreation 154 trails of varying difficulty with a total length of 300 km. Compared to Le Menuire, skating here is still a bit more difficult if you are a beginner, but those who have a higher level of skiing, on the contrary, will be more interesting. Snowboarders also love this resort.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Tien offers many other activities – sledding, dog sledding,
ice swimming, trekking, as well as indoor sports. At the same time, the Tien can be called a more party place, compared to Le Menuire – there is much more non-sporting entertainment, and there is even a cinema!
